Pause & Think About It

Digital Safety Project

Students created an interactive poster on digital safety using Makey Makey and Scratch.

Show this great video from Common Sense Media as an Introduction.

There is a great lesson on this site.  They use a book called Once Upon a Time Online to teach about fractured fairy tales and digital safety.  We discussed the book and than we created the wands that she explains how to do.

Discussion

I played the video Pause and Think About It located above.

As a class we discussed all the different ways to be safe online.

This was the question we were discussing. We practiced talking into a microphone as we went around and discussed the question. The students could pass the mic to anyone that they want.

Why is it important to pause and think about it before you post online?

When we were done we charted a lot of answers about being safe online.

Writing Lesson

The students used what was charted from the discussion and what they heard to answer this response. The link to the handout is in the resources below.

When the students were  done they  read what they wrote to a partner and got some feedback from their peers.

If they were done they went on Flipgrid and recorded their reasons about why it is important. After, they were able to respond to another persons Flipgrid.

Makey Makey

makey makey controller

The first lesson we did with the Makey Makey was to talk about what it is and how it works.

We used an Amazing Toy Energy Stick to understand what a complete circuit is.

We did a conductor/insulator scavengerhunt with the Makey Makey.

Poster board

Next the students were put into groups of four. The students were shown an example of what the poster should look like. The students were told to put the words Pause and Think About it in the middle. Their posters had holes in it. They were told that they would be covering them with conductors.  They were told to cover the poster with images that connect with the phrase.

If you want to know more how to make this poster check out this TeacherspayTeachers lesson. This is the second year that I have done the posters. The first year I did it with brass fasteners. When I found this lesson on TeacherspayTeachers I tweaked how I went about the poster.

SCRATCH

Here is the programming for the Scratch blocks. The students were each responsible for writing the program for one sprite. They recorded themselves reading the Pause and Think About it writing paper into the play sound. If they wanted they could write an algorithm to make their character change color or spin.

Final Presentation

The students showed their parents their posters and they sang the song to them.
